I’m a huge fan of books about books, as I’ve mentioned before, and this one is superb. When an ancient book is discovered, revealing a strange story of secret science experiments, a relationship is formed between the past and the present that no one expects. I was drawn deep into this story from page one, and couldn’t find my way out until the very last page. The technique of effectively alternating chapters from past to present, and back to the past again has always been one I’ve struggled with, and this author has mastered it magnificently. There is a seamlessness to the story that easily helps the imagination flow without abrupt transitions or skepticism.
The main characters in this story were wholly believable… even those based on a verifiable past. Although I don’t know much about Robert Louis Stevenson’s life and family, his story, as presented in this tale, was one I could easily accept because of the rich details, relaxed dialogue, and vibrant imagery. The present-day characters, as well, were compelling and engaging. My favorite of the subplot characters was Trip, a three-legged dog who, holds a strong emotional force in the story.
At each turn, I was left wondering how the two timelines would intersect and resolve, and never once was I disappointed. This is a story that is well conceived and never predictable.
