A fantastic "time-travel" device was used to bring this novel to life. First, the main character was a librarian, and he encounters an antiquarian book dealer who gifts him the "show book" because he discovers that there is a name in it that might be familiar to our hero. As it turns out, there is a secret within its pages that reveals a hidden history of his family.
The novel is told from two perspectives... first in the present, in first person. And then in the past, in third person. When reading the chapters from the past, I had the sensation that I was actually reading the "show book"... or having it read to me. This is exquisite storytelling! The present day story was just as riveting, and I loved the way both stories intertwined and connected each of the characters, no matter when they lived.
The characters were full, bright and each had a secret or two that was deliciously revealed... but only when the time was right. The momentum of the story held my attention, and the ending was something I was not expecting - and I was delighted!
I will be seeking out more work from this author - she is fantastic!
