Once again, the KerryTown BookFest did not disappoint! This was my third year participating in this wonderful literary festival, and I sincerely enjoyed it! As is the norm, the folks who organize this event each year do an amazing job. The tables are well spaced, and set up underneath the roof's covering to shade from sun and rain. We had perfect weather this year, and a nice breeze blew through the space all day long. The tables are always well organized so that like-minded souls are together and can meet and keep each other company throughout the day. I enjoy meeting people of different creative talents... it's part of why I love the writing community of Michigan so much. The people at KerryTown understand this and make it easy to have a comfortable, energetic day with strangers who soon become friends.
I especially enjoy attending this particular festival because it is outdoors and I get to meet many readers who bring along their puppy pals. There's not much I can do when a dog walks by... aside from ask to pet them and invite them to a cool drink of water and a doggie snack. I think I made some new friends. I don't know about you, but having the opportunity to meet two-legged and four-legged friends makes the festival that much more enjoyable for me.
Each year, I participate as both an author and representing Grey Wolfe Publishing; and each year, we do things just a little bit differently, and meet some extremely interesting people. This year, I shared our booth space with authors Caitlyn Mancini (Project S.K.I.E.) and Charles R. Stern (Juxtaposition Paradox); and of course, I was there with my four books (Free Will, Wolfe Cub, A Tryst of Fate, and The Griffin of Greed). It's so much fun to connect with readers and share my work with them. It's doubly fun when I get to spend the day co-promoting the books of authors I truly admire. I've attended book festivals on my own in the past, and it's fun - don't get me wrong - but sharing the day with other wonderfully creative people makes the day that much brighter. Meeting children who I know are going to grow up to be avid adult readers gives me a warm fuzzy feeling for our future. I love their enthusiasm when they hold a new books in their hands.
Grey Wolfe Publishing featured our new board game (The Writing Game) and we also had a Treasure Chest game where people drew colored stones out of a treasure chest to win discounts on books, discounts on "The Writing Game", or sometimes, FREE Mystery Books! It's always fun to bring along a game or contest to festivals. It's a wonderful way to meet shy people who maybe wouldn't have stopped without a little something silly to entice them. And I genuinely enjoy giving gifts to people, especially when it means they get to walk away with a FREE book!
We had a very successful day this year... We sold 20 books, two copies of "The Writing Game" and connected with lots of talented authors, aspiring writers, and teachers. Selling books is extremely exciting... but I must admit, I really do love to visit with the people (and the puppies).
Next year's KerryTown BookFest will be September 10, 2017... and you can be sure that as soon as booths become available, my name is going to be on that list! This is an event that, as long as I live in Michigan, I'll attend every year. So put it on your calendar and plan on joining me; I know you won't regret it!
