Today is "Encourage A Young Writer" day. This is a mandate that I take to heart... not just on April 10th, but every day whenever life gives me the opportunity. I truly believe that a love of life-long writing starts when we're young... when we discover the wonderment of creating worlds and the characters that will run through them.
I was very young - about six or seven - when I learned how much fun writing could be, and I took great delight in sharing my love of books and writing with anyone who would listen. Today, at fifty-three, it's no different. If you're willing to listen, I'll tell you exactly how amazing the writing process can be!
So, when I had to opportunity to work with the "Coyotes" at Carkenord Elementary school again (my second visit to their school), I was extremely excited. I was their "extra" teacher for three weeks. We engaged ourselves in the excitement of writing beginning with choosing a plot, crafting characters, weaving it all into a story, and then taking a critical review and making edits. I was fortunate to work with fifty-five amazing second, third and fourth grade students and be there when their imaginations were given life on the printed page.
Their stories are in final edit and layout right now, and will soon come together in an anthology titled, "A Book of Books". The students chose the name and the cover design... we (Grey Wolfe Publishing and I) helped with the final steps in bringing it to press.
We're having a "Launch Event" on May 11, 2017 to celebrate their hard work and creative imaginations. Some students will be reading their work to the crowd, and everyone will be on hand to greet visitors and sign books. Some of the students also drew illustrations to go with their stories, which makes the book even more exciting. The proceeds from sales of the anthology will be returned to the school to continue supporting their literacy programs.
So, if you are in the Chesterfield Township area on May 11th, at about 6:30pm, we'd love it if you would come out and encourage these young people as they present their first published works to the world.
For those of you who can't make the event, a pre-order form will become available soon, and the book will be on sale at Amazon and Kindle shortly after publication... watch my Blog Thingy for details.
And, if every you are given the chance to encourage a young writer... please do! After all, we're all going to want more books to read as we grow older.
