A dear friend gave me a delightful gift for the holidays. It's a small wooden box with a duck on it! Adam knows that I love ducks, and he works hard to find fun duck-related presents for me on a regular basis. Drake appreciates the new friends, as well.
Meet Fred, the Festival Duck
Fred and I are using using a nifty little app that I found in the Android App Store... It's simply called "Money Challenge" by RTS AppDevelopment It's a neat way to keep track of how much you're saving each week. You can either go with a prescribed plan of saving a specified amount each week, or you can be more flexible, checking off whichever week you want, and putting that amount of money aside.
The idea is to set aside $1 during week one, $2 during week two, and so on, until during week fifty-two, when the intention is that you set aside $52; for a grand total at the end of the year of $1,378! The "Standard" option tells you every week how much money to set aside in that week. The "Flexible" option - the one Fred and I are using - gives you the ability to tell the app what amount you're putting aside, and it saves the tally for you, letting you know which weeks you've already saved, and which ones have yet to be checked off. We're using this method because some weeks we have a little more extra cash than other weeks. Today, for instance, It's week one, but I gave $20 to Fred, so I checked off that week's box on the app.
The best part is, the app does the math for us!. It gives us a running summary of how much money Fred and I are saving. So unless we cheat, and take money out of the box without replacing it, the app will always know how much we've saved, and we never have to count it! This is "set it and forget it" saving in a place that's not easily accessible through the ATM card when I'm out with friends! This is a bonus for me because not only do I suck at math... but if the money is in my account, it means that it's fair game. Keeping the money with Fred means it's out of sight, and off of my spending radar!
The app also has a nifty little reminder, to nag us on a date and time of my choosing, to make sure I'm sticking with the program.. This is also a bonus for me, because sometimes I get so busy that I forget to do stuff, and having reminders is a good thing! I'm hoping that as the year progresses, I'll be able to double my deposits to Fred, and save even more money.
The ultimate goal is to participate in as many book festivals in more places around the world as I possibly can. With Fred's help, I think I'll be able to reach that goal.
