NaNoWriMo 2016 didn't go as either Drake or I had planned. We ran into four plot twist issues, which required four complete rewrites. A couple of characters decided to step up and be heroes. One character, who was previously very quiet, insisted on being a villain. Oh, and the ending changed three times. But that stuff happens. The life of a writer is never simple and almost never easy. First drafts of any book are foiled frequently by the mayhem of a constantly changing undertow in the well of the imagination.
I'm happy with the direction the story has taken. The new plot outline is richer, and runs deeper. The heroes and villains have finally found their voices, and the ending is exactly what I was looking for; it's completely different from the other three novels that I've got waiting in Drake's wings. (He keeps stories there for safekeeping, and so I don't get distracted, although sometimes I get distracted anyway.)
So, no, even though we paddled like crazy and typed ferociously, we didn't reach the expected 50,000 word count; nor do I expect that with a little more than a week left in the month, do I think we will. However, we did get a stupendous start on what will be an extraordinary novel! The goal is still to release the book in August of 2017. We plan to debut it at the Once Upon A Book author extravaganza in Frankenmuth, Michigan.
Drake and I will continue to post snippets of our progress on our website, and I ask that you do what you can to support me in this quest. Although Drake's quacking almost never falls on my deaf ear... sometimes he needs a little help in the author encouragement department. I recognize that this Muse stuff is hard work for him. I'm not the easiest of writers to work with... and he is helping to manage four books for me right now. He could use a little cheering squad of his own sometimes. We would both greatly appreciate any strength you would be willing to send our way! Thank you, in advance.
So, here it is, the day before Thanksgiving, and I must admit defeat. At this point, with only a week or so left... there is no way that I'll be able to meet the 50,000 word count goal. I'll keep writing, of course. After all, I still have a novel to get written, and the story truly is now at a place where it is beginning to write itself, which makes things MUCH easier. But I must accept that this year, the only thing that got in my way of attaining the goal were the constantly changing voices in my head. I promised Drake I wouldn't blame him, but in all honesty, he's one of the voices; and a loud one, at that.
I have full confidence that we'll be able to finish the book on time for it's intended debut in August of 2017. I've already blocked aside "mandatory writing days" in my calendar. We'll get there... with your support, some dedicated writing time at the cabin, and a little bit of Drake's Magical Musings.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
