This past summer, I had a great deal of fun designing a board game for Grey Wolfe Publishing. We called it "The Writing Game". It's a fun cross between Monopoly®
and Shoots & Ladders®.
The object of the game is, of course, to be the first player to become a "Best Selling Author". Along the way, you will encounter writer's block, book signing events, and other writerly achievements and trials as you work your way through the game. Be careful not to abandon your manuscript, or you'll lose the game!
As you roll the dice, each square you land on gives you instructions about a writerly moment you've encountered, and it gives you an action to perform... move ahead, move back, rest, or draw a card. The game is fast paced, and has lots of twists and turns, making each player's journey through the game fun and unique. The game is designed for four players twelve years and older.
I took the game with me to a couple of writer's group meetings, and everyone enjoyed playing it... each game lasted about twenty minutes or so... depending on how many times each player moves forward and backward. Our group of adults ranging in age from late 20s to late 60s enjoyed it a lot! There were plenty of giggles going around the table.
You can order your copy of The Writing Game from Grey Wolfe Publishing; it makes a great gift! It's usually $25, but for the holidays (until December 25), it's on sale for just $15! If you order a copy of the game, I hope you'll return to my blog and leave a review on this page. I'd love to hear your thoughts on playing The Writing Game.
Oh, and I'm designing another writing game for younger children that teaches youngsters about the joys of writing a short story with their friends. It is expected to be released in early February, just in time for Valentine's Day! Join Drake's Newsy Thingy to stay up to date on the details of this exciting new game!
