Book Festivals provide something special for authors. It's one of the most intimate ways I can think of for authors to reach out to readers, meet them, and share our writing on a one-to-one level. Without the formality of a "reading & signing" event, festivals create a comfortable environment for readers to approach their favorite authors and get to know them... as real people rather than as "celebrities".
Gratitude swells large in me when readers approach my table, ask about my book, my writing style, or just chat about the genres they enjoy. Sure, it's extra special when someone buys my book and asks me to inscribe it for them... but for a reader to take the time to stop and say hello... I revere that time as sacred. People connecting with creativity... on a personal level... in public... that's got to be nearly as stupendous as finding my book on the shelf of my local library.
I was honored today to be featured, with my company, Grey Wolfe Publishing, on the KerryTown Book Fest website as a participating author. This particular festival is very special to me. I keep returning, year after year. It's a wondrous collection of writers, book makers, and literary people from all walks of life... and many are from right here in Michigan... my home. Being an author at this festival reminds me that I am part of a vibrant community of writers and readers... a fraternity of sorts... one that values the written word just as much as I do.
Visit the KerryTown Book Fest website to learn about some of the other authors, and discover all the wonderful panel discussions, readings, and children's events they have planned. I promise, it will be a day to remember.
Oh, and one last thing... the festival is held in the KerryTown farmers' market... an open-air market with a roof... so we'll all be there, waiting to meet you, come rain or come shine! Bring your canine companion and stop by the Grey Wolfe Publishing table for special snacks and a cool water bowl for your fuzzy friend.
I hope you'll come out to Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 11, 2016 and visit me and all the other fascinating writerly people for a day of literary indulgence. You won't regret the time spent. And... we'll have a couple extra chairs if you'd like to sit and chat a while.
