This past Sunday, I had the distinct pleasure of enjoying the elegant surroundings at Leon & LuLu's in Clawson, MI as I introduced myself and my books to visitors.
I love appearing at events like this... not only was this one very local to my home - just about two miles away (which makes it really nice for packing the car and driving) - but it also gives me a chance to support local charities. At this event, 40% of the proceeds are going to support the Oakland Literacy Council. Anytime I have an opportunity to support literacy, you know I'm there!
The staff at Leon & LuLu's were fabulous! They were beyond kind, meticulously organized, and provided us with luxurious table arrangements to set up our books. For those of you who are unfamiliar, Leon & LuLu's is an astounding boutique offering a wide selection of clothing, furniture, artwork, and other household decorative items. The shop used to be a well-frequented roller rink several years ago (yes, I spent time there in my teens). They've kept the original floors and ceiling joists, and filled in with wonderful enticements. If you're looking for a place to go gift shopping this holiday season, this would be a nice place to start.
Karen, the organizer of this event, offered every type of support imaginable. She provided each author with a receipt book to tally the sales - and better yet - she did the math for us! They offered authors and visitors alike coffee, tea, pastries, popcorn, and at lunchtime, hot dogs... often times delivered to our tables by a young lady on roller skates! It was a wonderfully relaxing day.
I met a host of intriguing people, sold some books, talked with authors about their books (even indulged in a purchase or two of my own - who can resist with such talent so close by!) and talked about publishing with emerging writers. And... in between visitors, I was able to add about 1,500 words to my new science fiction novel, "The Last Strand".
All in all, I can say I had a tremendous day. Karen tells me that they had such a fantastic response - filling both of their buildings with authors and readers (they've also converted the old Clawson Movie Theatre next door) - that they are planning TWO events for next year!
This was a successful, productive, and extremely enjoyable event for me. I'm looking forward to joining the kind folks at Leon & LuLu's again next year!
