Fate: Do you ever consider what of your life is:
1. Fate (the will or principle or determining cause by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events to happen as they do);
2. Kismet (an inevitable and often adverse outcome, condition, or end); or simply being
3. Prepared (to make ready beforehand for some purpose, use, or activity)?
For many years of my life, I believed that the first two energies were far more important than the last one. I believed that things happened in my life out of some mystical and strange force from elsewhere unknown that controlled my life's flow. It made me feel less guilty about not achieving what I desired; but also less in control, and less happy when my life didn't progress as I would have liked.
As I got older and experienced more of the world, I came to understand that Fate and Kismet, though part and parcel of how life is contrived, are inadequate without a good strong dose of Preparedness. If I did not prepare my body properly, I would not lose weight and become healthy. If I did not prepare my mind properly, I would not learn, and grow, and become adaptable to life's changes. If I did not prepare a plan for my future - in all areas of my life: parenting, working, loving, recharging - I would not be comfortable enough in my own spirit to rejoice in all that Fate and Kismet brought to my doorstep.
There is something, surely, to be said for being in the right place at the right time, surrounded by the right people. However, if you are not well prepared, all of those wonderful resources will be wasted space, energy, and communion. I was reminded of this very clear fact about my life just a short time ago.
I was approached by someone with a request and a commission to write a biography about his father, a well respected, self-made success story who rose out of the ashes of the Holocaust. This was a dream opportunity! I felt honored and privileged that I would be given the chance to participate in such a worthy project. This person said that he'd been looking for someone to tell this story for some time, but that the right person had not presented themselves. And then he discovered me; "a smart, articulate, creative, dependable, straight-forward person, who also just happened to be an author". He said it must be the right time; that Fate and Kismet had finally convened to show him the best writer for this project.
I agreed with him. This certainly was a wonderful turn of events; a cloud-nine type of opportunity; a chance to really stretch my writing wings beyond fiction or memoir or poetry, and create a Legacy for a man, his children, and grandchildren for generations to come. The mere thought of it brought goose bumps to my flesh. I was overjoyed! Fate had dealt me a wondrous hand!!
In the car while driving home, it occurred to me that while yes, Fate and Kismet were surely working in my favor that day; so was my ability to be Prepared for this day to show itself in my life.
I never would have been approached for this commission if I had not studied my craft carefully and become proficient at it. If I had not taken the time to get that degree in English to hone my skills. If I had not continued to work to become a better writer over the last many years. If I had not practiced my typing skills to become a speedy typist of 120wpm. Or if I had not made my skills and desire to write all types of projects known to my those around me. If I had not taken the initiative to become Prepared for my life to go in the direction I most desired, I would have never been offered this amazing opportunity.
Unfortunately, the project fizzled when the individual discovered the amount of work that would be required, money involved, and time investment he would need to make personally to contribute to the outcome... and yet, I have no regrets. I was prepared, even if he wasn't, to take on a project of this scope, and I was proud of that fact.
I must remember these points, and apply them to my desire to all attain my goals and dreams. However, if I do not Prepare myself in mind, body, and spirit to achieve the outcome that I most desire, it will never be.
I must not only collect the best tools and the best friends to assist in my plan - I must also have a plan! I need to Prepare a plan that will take me from step one to step one thousand and one - until my goal is reached. I need to plan with a seven-generation view, and become accountable to it's tracking mechanisms. And I must never stop learning more effective methods of planning and doing!
Having a happy, fulfilling, successful, peaceful life means starting with a plan and getting Prepared. If I'm not Prepared, I'll miss all the wonderment life has yet to show me - and wouldn't that just be a waste of space, energy, and life!!!
