This was an especially enjoyable festival! I don't think I've ever seen so many people in one place before (except at a concert or sporting event)... and the best part was that they were all interested in BOOKS! What more could an author ask for?!
This was the Detroit Book Club's first book festival, and they did a spectacular job pulling it all together. The space was large, and airy... big doors and large ceiling fans brought in wonderful breezes to keep us comfy all day. We were well-shaded from the sunshine, and protected from the threat of rain - which never came. The tables were well-spaced and grouped well. Not too much of one type of book or vendor in one place... the variety was wonderful to see.
Both new and used books were represented, as well as indie authors (like me) and bookshops, small press publishers, and other bookish people. The flow of the crowds was well-managed because of the huge spaces between the rows of tables, and even though there was music, it wasn't too loud, and didn't over-power conversations with people who visited my table.
An added bonus for visitors was the easy access to bathrooms - in two locations - the readily accessible ATM machine; and the food trucks right outside the door. The aromas of various lunch opportunities was quite enticing.
I sold a lot of books, connected with some wonderful authors - some old friends, some new friends - and simply enjoyed the day. Tips to remember for next year... bring a carpet square to stand on (that concrete was murder on my feet), and a tall stool so that I can greet visitors eye-to-eye but not have to stand all day!
This was a wonderful event, I had a lot of fun, and will definitely be back again next year!
